Zahraa’s Journey into Data Analysis

line

Zahraa Yaseen, one of the She Codes Too and DataCamp Scholarship participants, joined the program with a strong desire to learn Python beyond what she had briefly studied in college. Coming from Diwaniya, where opportunities are limited, Zahraa embraced this fully online, self-paced program that included mentorship, technical support, and soft skills development. With no prior background in data analysis, she gradually learned essential tools and techniques and gained confidence in herself and her capabilities. She now encourages other Iraqi girls to take advantage of similar opportunities that can transform their futures.

Why did you apply for the She Codes Too + DataCamp Scholarship?

I really wanted to learn Python. I had studied it briefly in college, but only the basics. When I saw that She Codes Too had announced a scholarship in partnership with DataCamp for Data Analysis, I applied and was really hopeful I would get accepted — and I did! 🥰

What I loved most was that the scholarship was completely online and didn’t require in-person attendance. Opportunities like this are very rare in my province.

How did the She Codes Too team support you during the program?

She Codes Too gave us amazing support, even though the course was self-paced. We could ask questions or raise anything we didn’t understand at any time, and the mentors were always helpful — from the first session to the last day of the program.

Most of the Zoom sessions helped us improve our soft skills too — like how to write a CV or use job platforms effectively.

What made this experience different from other training opportunities?

I had done some internships before, but what made She Codes Too different for me was the huge amount of support we received. There was always someone available to help — whether it was a mentor or even one of my fellow participants. 🥰

How has your understanding of data analysis changed?

Before the scholarship, I had no idea what data analysis was or what tools were involved. But throughout the learning journey, I gradually built my knowledge and started studying the field more seriously.

I'm proud of myself because I never imagined I would be able to enter this kind of field.

I improved my knowledge of Python libraries like Seaborn and Matplotlib, and I learned how to extract and analyse data. I also earned several certificates from the platform during my learning journey.

Why do you think programs like She Codes Too matter in Iraq?

A program like She Codes Too can play a huge role in developing girls’ technical skills.

I really encourage every girl who wants to grow her skills to apply. It’s a rare and valuable opportunity. Girls in Iraq often suffer from a lack of access to training, mentoring, and educational resources. This program offers all of that.

The best part was that it was online — which really matters in provinces where opportunities are limited. I’m truly grateful for that.

Any final thoughts or advice for others?

I absolutely encourage other girls to apply. Since I joined, I’ve already encouraged my friends to apply too, because it’s such a great opportunity that helps us grow both personally and technically.

In the end, I’m very grateful to She Codes Too — and to everyone who gave us support, effort, and time.
