Tell us a bit about yourself, and where you are from (City), your interests and your educational or professional background.

My name is Salwa Al-Zahid, and I am from Baghdad, Iraq. I am passionate about human rights, protection, civic engagement, peacebuilding, and using data analysis to make informed decisions. I graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Technology in 2010. Over the years, I have worked extensively in humanitarian and development projects, including election monitoring, gaining experience in project management, monitoring and evaluation, women’s empowerment, the protection of women and children, and peacebuilding initiatives. Recently, I enhanced my skills through specialised data analysis training with the She Codes Too program, which has opened new doors for me in the private sector and beyond.

What inspired you to pursue coding? Why did you want to join the tech world?

For four years, I have been trying to determine the right step to enter the private sector, especially since my professional background has been in the field of civil society organisations and far from this sector. What inspired me to enter the field of technology and programming is the realisation that acquiring these skills would be a bridge to the private sector, where I can apply my analytical and problem-solving abilities in a practical and effective way. Learning to code also gives me the opportunity to advance my career and open new horizons for women in this field.

What was your initial impression when you joined She Codes Too?

Despite the challenges the program faced, there was a significant ethical commitment from the program team, mentors, and trainees to successfully complete it. The experience was rich and full of practical learning, where I gained data analysis skills using Excel, SQL, Power BI, and Python. It also provided me with a supportive environment that encouraged the exchange of knowledge and experiences among everyone

How would you describe your overall experience in the Front-End Web Development and Business programme?

My overall experience in the data analysis program was exceptional and very enriching, despite the challenges we faced. The program provided a supportive learning environment, with a strong commitment from the program team, mentors, and trainees to complete it successfully. I acquired important practical and technical skills in data analysis using Excel, SQL, Power BI, and Python. I also learned how to clean data, analyse trends, and create dashboards, which boosted my confidence and my ability to apply these skills in actual work.

What were your favourite classes, projects, or moments during the training?

What I loved most during the training was the Capstone Project, where we, as a team of trainees, worked on developing a 'Banking Alerts System Dashboard' to support anti-fraud teams by analysing data and visualising alert patterns. I felt a great sense of pride because we practically applied all the skills we had learned, and our teamwork and collaboration helped us complete the project with high efficiency. I also enjoyed the practical lessons on data analysis, cleaning, and presenting it in an organised manner, which were very enjoyable and useful
