Curious to Confident: Rozin's DataCamp Journey

line

Rozin, a computer science student, turned her curiosity into confidence through the She Codes Too + DataCamp Scholarship. Despite struggling with university learning, she found her spark in data science and Python, working on impactful projects like mental health and video game analysis. As one of 30 participants in the 6-month program (January–June 2025), she explored over 400 courses and 24+ career tracks, discovering not just new tech skills, but a sense of belonging, encouragement, and purpose through She Codes Too’s supportive community.

What motivated you to apply for the scholarship?

As a computer science student, I had a hard time learning in university for several reasons. I didn’t want to fall behind so I started exploring self-learning and tried to dive into different areas of CS and tech to figure out what I genuinely enjoyed. I was curious and open to discovering new things.

When I saw the DataCamp scholarship through She Codes Too, it caught my attention. I read about data and the data science field and I was interested. It felt like something worth exploring so I thought, “why not give it a shot?”

That curiosity led me to apply and getting accepted was the push I needed. That’s how I got started with the course and began diving deeper into the world of data.

What was your main goal in the program?

My main goal was simple: I wanted to explore and learn new things.

Data science was one of the areas that stood out to me during the exploration. It was something that I hadn’t deeply looked into before and I was curious about what it involved.

What kind of courses and projects did you complete?

On DataCamp I focused on data science related tracks, I learnt the basics of data science and gradually started applying those skills through hands-on projects.

A couple of projects I worked on involved analyzing data related to mental health and video games. They gave me the insight into how data can be used to understand patterns and solve problems and even raise awareness on important topics.

Which skills were you most excited to learn?

One of my favorite parts of the learning journey was diving into Python-related topics.

Python had been on my ‘to learn’ list for a long time, and this scholarship gave me the perfect opportunity to finally focus on it.

I enjoyed how hands-on and practical the learning was, it wasn’t just theory, I was actually writing code and seeing how it worked.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Of course, there were challenges too.

The main challenge I was facing during the program was managing my time. It was difficult at times to balance everything — personal life, university, work, and DataCamp.

What helped me was breaking things down and giving each area its own time and attention.

How did She Codes Too support your journey?

I never felt like I was doing it alone.

She Codes Too was very supportive throughout the program. They regularly checked with us all the time to see if we had any questions or needed any help with anything.

This consistent communication made me feel very supported and motivated. Beyond just offering help, they created a positive and friendly environment that made everyone encouraged and comfortable.

I definitely benefited from She Codes Too community engagement.

Being part of discussions and having access to shared resources helped me learn more effectively and stay motivated throughout the program.

It was encouraging to connect with others who were on a similar learning journey.

What made the She Codes Too community special?

What makes She Codes Too community special is the welcoming and kind environment they create.

Everyone is respectful, helpful, and kind. So, you never feel afraid to ask questions.

The community isn’t overly serious or formal, which makes it easy to feel connected. It feels like being a part of a close group of friends.

What are you most proud of after completing the program?

Since taking this scholarship, my confidence in data has grown significantly.

I’ve learned a lot through courses and working on projects gave me hands-on experience.

Now I feel comfortable using tools like Python and SQL and understand how they can be used to solve real world problems.

This experience has motivated me to continue learning and explore new areas in tech with more confidence.

What achievement means the most to you?

The skill I’m most proud of gaining through this scholarship is definitely learning Python.

It was something I had wanted to learn for a long time and now I feel comfortable writing code and applying Python to real-life problems.

I’ve received many certificates through the program. The ones I’d like to share are:

Associate Data Scientist

Data Scientist

I’m very proud of both achievements because they represent the hard work and dedication I put into learning new skills and advancing my knowledge in the field.

Why are programs like this important ?

I believe programs like this are incredibly valuable, especially for women in Iraq.

Often, we don’t have easy access to quality courses or learning opportunities in our local areas.

Programs like this make it possible to learn from home, breaking down barriers related to location, time, or other challenges.

This kind of access can empower many women to gain skills and confidence in tech.

Would you recommend She Codes Too to others?

If someone is thinking of joining She Codes Too, I’d definitely tell them to go for it.

It’s a supportive community that not only helps to learn valuable skills but also makes the whole journey enjoyable and motivating.

You don’t need to be an expert to start, just be curious and ready to grow.

The resources, guidance, and positive environment will help you succeed no matter where you started from.

What’s a moment from your journey that stands out most?

A memorable moment from my journey was when I completed one of my data projects.

I used that project for one of my university assignments and my teacher was impressed and praised my work saying “It deserved to be acknowledged.”

That moment made me really happy because it was the first time I saw how I could apply my skills in a meaningful way.

It made me realize how valuable being part of that program was for my personal and professional growth.
