How Maryam Turned Her Passion into Skills

line

Maryam Nazar, a 20-year-old oil and gas engineering student from Basra, shares her inspiring journey in the She Codes Too x DataCamp programme. With a deep passion for data science, she completed a 36-hour Python data analyst track, tackled real-world projects, and gained the confidence to work with large datasets. While juggling her university studies, Maryam found strength in the community and support system provided by She Codes Too. Her story is a testament to the power of consistent learning, supportive communities, and programmes designed to uplift women in tech.

What inspired you to apply for the DataCamp Donate scholarship through She Codes Too?

Unlimited passion for data science and data analytics, I always thought that those are fascinating fields with endless opportunities, so I didn't hesitate when I saw the scholarship ad.

What were your goals to learn, and what courses did you take on DataCamp?

I wanted to learn the complete python for data analysis, and I did. I took a 36h career track: data analyst in python. I completed 5 projects within the track, very diverse and from everyday life problems: answering business questions, creating summary statistics of given population, sorting big data sets and helping making hypothetical data driven decisions.

Which courses or topics were your favourite, and why?

I really enjoyed the last courses which presented hypothesis testing and other complex stuff like sampling. I like the concept of dealing with populations, with huge data, and how we can take a relatively small sample and it can tell us a lot about a particular population. I really like challenges and relatively complex topics so the journey felt like a dream!

Were there any challenges you faced while learning? How did you overcome them?

I was a sophomore oil and gas engineering student, it was kinda hard to keep a record and a streak of everything I learned in the scholarship, but I tried to be as consistent as I can, by learning even for a few minutes a day till the end of finals and the beginning of summer, thankfully, I passed and I'm now a junior. Also, there were a few weeks when I felt unmotivated due to my slow progress, but thanks to Hajar, Raghad, and the other girls, they helped a lot with dealing with mental and negative thoughts during that period of slow learning.

How did She Codes Too support you during the programme?

They did everything perfectly, they helped a lot as I mentioned beforehand with dealing and handling of negative feelings of me and others, they kept a much needed positive environment for new learners regarding any backgrounds. I really felt welcomed and supported as a woman in the tech field.

Did you benefit from the SCT community engagement, discussions, or shared resources?

Very much! That discord server is truly a hidden gem!

What did you gain from guest speaker sessions organised by She Codes Too?

Connections and a very needed practical insight of the jobs related to the topics I've been learning.

What makes the She Codes Too community different or special in your opinion?

The girls are very light-hearted and welcoming, very helpful and encouraging, the community as a whole is a very very positive environment for learners. They put such a hard effort into everything, and do it perfectly seamlessly. I'm really glad that I've stumbled upon such an amazing community.

How has your confidence in data or tech changed since taking this scholarship?

I can say it's a 200% rise :)

What skills or knowledge are you most proud of gaining?

I can proudly handle data sets and answer questions about it accurately

Have you earned any certificates or completed any projects that you'd like to share?

I'm very hyped about my 36h track completed xD it was insane.

Have you managed to secure a job, internship, or freelance opportunity in the field you studied? If yes, please tell us more about it.

No, because I don't seek any jobs currently, but I gained so much information about possible jobs and this market.

How do you think programmes like this one can impact women in Iraq and beyond?

It can definitely change many lives. A whole world of opportunities is opened to me, thanks to this incredible program. It will definitely help with data literacy of women here in Iraq if it gets adopted by large compaige/companies in real life across the country. A woman to woman program is really powerful.

If someone is thinking of joining She Codes Too, what would you tell them?

To learn as much as they can, and to have fun! Incredibles are waiting for them :)

Can you share a memorable moment from your journey?

The very first time that I could read and understand code programs about petroleum engineering related topics. I felt really powerful and smart xD it was an oil-well production prediction program in python.
