Haneen’s Transformation: From Lab Coats to Code

line

Haneen Mansour, a chemist from Baghdad, spent a decade working in chemical analysis before discovering her passion for tech. Motivated by a desire to innovate in the medical field, she joined She Codes Too while balancing her roles as a mother and wife. Through the programme, she mastered web development and business skills, gained confidence, and began working as a freelancer. Now, she’s building a programme to empower other girls through tech—proof that change begins with one bold step. Haneen was part of the Front-End Web Development and Business program, implemented by She Codes Too with the support of Baghdad Business School and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. This extensive, in-person, seven-month program ran from February 2024 to August 2024, graduating 22 women. Read her inspiring journey below.

How did you find out about She Codes Too and what inspired you to join?

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Haneen Mansour, I’m 30 years old and from Baghdad. I love photography and have a deep passion for learning. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and worked in the field of analysis for ten years. However, with the rapid pace of technological development, I felt a strong desire to change and an ambition to contribute to medical technology. I chose programming as a tool to achieve this goal because it gives me the opportunity to innovate with every project I work on.

One day, I discovered She Codes Too through social media, and from the first moment, I felt I was in the right place. I challenged myself as a working mother and wife and decided to join the programme, which provides a supportive environment for women and encourages them to achieve their goals. Balancing my home responsibilities with studying was a major challenge, but I was determined to complete everything and succeed.

What did you learn from the programme?

I learned so much during this journey. The combination of developing technical skills and strengthening communication skills was essential. One of my favourite moments was presenting my first project during the Portfolio Showcase—I felt incredibly proud despite all the difficulties I had faced. Those moments were full of challenges, but they taught me that strength comes from confronting hardship.

How has your life changed after joining the programme?

My life changed drastically after joining She Codes Too. I became more capable of managing and programming medical devices and found new work opportunities as a freelance web developer. I also learned project management, public relations, and teamwork, all of which gave me the confidence I previously lacked.

What are your future goals?

Today, I’m working on transferring this experience to girls around the world. I’m building a programme to teach them the skills I’ve gained, because I believe education is the key to change. I want to help them move beyond traditional environments into spaces where they can make a real difference in their lives.

Any final thoughts about your journey and message to others?

I proved to myself during this journey that I am strong and capable of facing any challenge. She Codes Too is an opportunity for any woman seeking change and success—it’s a platform that can transform her life for the better. Thank you to She Codes Too and to Raghad for this incredible opportunity that allows women to achieve their dreams. We, as women, are capable of making a difference, and we must believe in our strength and ability to succeed.
