A Story of Confidence and Determination - Aya’s Story

line

Aya Lahab, a Computer Engineering graduate from the University of Basra, found herself uncertain about her career direction after graduation. Her curiosity led her to data analysis, and through the She Codes Too x DataCamp scholarship, she discovered a path that reshaped her skills, confidence, and mindset. Surrounded by a supportive community of women, Aya not only learned Python, SQL, and Power BI but also grew into a confident learner who now inspires others to follow their passion in tech.

How did my journey begin?

My name is Aya, and I am a graduate of Computer Engineering from the University of Basra. Like many new graduates, I felt lost after finishing my studies. I wasn’t sure what field to enter, what to study further, or which career path to pursue. With so many options, I was confused.

How did you discover data analysis?

While exploring different fields, I came across data analysis and it immediately caught my interest. Unfortunately, I didn’t have many resources to learn more about it. That changed when I discovered the DataCamp Donate scholarship through She Codes Too. I applied, was accepted, and considered myself lucky to join such a great opportunity.

What did you learn during the scholarship?

Through the programme, I studied Python, SQL, and Power BI tracks. I learned a lot and also applied my knowledge to small projects, such as analysing student performance with Python, creating dashboards with Power BI, and practising SQL projects. These experiences made me realise how exciting and meaningful data analysis can be.

What made this experience special?

What made this journey truly special was the She Codes Too community. The environment was positive, comfortable, and supportive. Being surrounded by other women in tech motivated me to continue learning, pushed me to be more confident, and inspired me to pursue what I love.

What was the most memorable moment for You?

One unforgettable moment was when other women told me that I had inspired them to keep learning. Knowing that I could positively impact others gave me even more motivation.

What did you gain from the guest speaker sessions?

The guest speaker sessions also enriched my experience. I learned about LinkedIn, GitHub, interview preparation, and soft skills, all of which gave me confidence and practical knowledge for my career journey.

How did this scholarship change you?

This scholarship gave me much more than technical skills. It changed my mindset, lifestyle, and self-confidence. I realised I am not alone, and I met amazing women who are eager to learn and succeed. For the first time, I felt part of a strong and inspiring community.

What personal growth have you experienced?

I was once shy and hesitant to speak, but now I feel more comfortable discussing, sharing, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. My future plan is to become an expert in data analysis and hopefully secure a job in the field. Even if the path changes, this scholarship has already changed me deeply — teaching me discipline, self-growth, and the ability to believe in myself.

What advice would you give to other women?

To any woman in Iraq or beyond who is thinking about applying for this scholarship - do it. It’s not only about learning technical skills, it’s about transforming your mindset, building confidence, and joining a community that empowers you to grow.

Any final words?

I’m truly grateful to She Codes Too and the DataCamp scholarship for this life-changing experience.
